Welcome to ECAC
There
was a time when neighbors knew each other, and supported those in need.
There was a time when neighborhoods spoke out against negative things happening
around them. There was a time when we could talk, play games that weren't
plugged in, learn from each other or just sit and enjoy a cup of coffee
on the front porch. Rather than reminisce on the old days, the Emergence
Community Arts Collective believes we can revive them.
The ECAC builds on the strengths of the community by providing informal and formal gathering space, capturing neighborhood history, engaging new and old residents in civic discourse, and reconnecting the generations of residents. ECAC is a model for a true community center designed to rebuild the social networks that are critical to community development.
Walk with us
Many
hands and hearts helped to restore this abandoned building when the general
contractor went out of business and the plumber disappeared. It was then
that we knew the value of a community center – not one imposed on a community,
but one built by the community. In the four years we have been open, there
has been phenomenal growth as people “discover” the treasure that has always
been here. It’s even more rewarding to see their reaction when they realize
that this building has, in fact served the community since 1927. Yes, our
programs are much needed and well attended, but what we need the most is
sustainability. This building which has served for almost 100 years must
serve 100 more. But no matter how much sweat equity is contributed, the
doors won’t stay open without donors willing to support our operations.
The ECAC Capacity/Sustainability Campaign is an effort to raise $2.2M over
4 years to ensure the continued existence of this valuable space and programs
into the next century. Join our campaign to put vision into action. Best
of all, you can see your dollars at work by participating in our activities,
and even sharing a part of yourself through a workshop or discussion.
